This collection contains an oversize color photograph of an unsigned painted portrait of Richard Franklin Simpson (1798-1882). Richard Franklin was the father of Richard Wright Simpson, Thomas Green Clemson's lawyer and first President of the Board of Trustees of Clemson College. The portrait was originally owned by Jane William Jones (Mrs. Leonard E. Jones) of Newport, TN, and great grand-daughter of Richard Franklin Simpson until her death on September 21, 1971, when it passed to Mrs. Earl Price of Greeneville, TN.

Colonel Simpson, a legislator and lawyer of Anderson County; Confidential lawyer to Thomas G. Clemson, who wrote Clemson's will which made provision for an agricultural college. Col. Simpson, named as one of the original trustees, was also executor of Clemson's estate. He served as the 1st Chairman of the Board of Trustees. From the description of Richard W.
